What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is placed in the jaw bone to provide an anchor for a crown, bridge or denture. The jaw bone heals around the implant and integrates with the bone, providing a permanent restoration option that looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth.

We offer three types of dental implants:

Single Implants
Missing teeth can often cause cosmetic and functional issues. If you have lost a single tooth, the prospect of wearing a removable denture is not very pleasant. Even dental bridges that are fixed in place are not ideal as you will need to rely on another tooth in the mouth to hold the false tooth in place. This can often lead to destruction of the anchor tooth as well. Dental Implants are the gold standard in replacing missing teeth. They are a completely fixed solution and will restore your bite and smile.

Implant Bridges
If you have several missing teeth, a dental implant bridge is a perfect way to replace multiple missing teeth to provide you a fixed, permanent solution. Dental Implant bridges can be used to replace only a few missing teeth or even a full mouth of missing teeth. This provides an excellent cosmetic restoration which also improves function to your bite. Not to mention, your confidence will be restored once the gap in your smile is concealed.

Implant Retained Dentures
If you’re tired of dentures that slip in your mouth, come loose, or rub against your gums, then dental implants could offer an ideal solution. The main problem with dentures is that they rely on a few of your remaining teeth or just the gums alone to hold them in place. Implant dentures can be secured by using as little as two implants in the lower jaw and four implants in the upper jaw. Often your current denture can be adapted and can give you the confidence to continue eating your favourite foods and to smile with confidence again.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

To be a suitable candidate for dental implants, you will need to undergo an examination of your mouth and jaw and answer questions about your medical history and your lifestyle.

Smoking is one of the biggest risk factors for dental implant failure, so we would typically expect you to quit smoking ahead of your treatment and be committed to not start again.

We will need to X-ray your teeth and take CT scans of your mouth to determine if you have sufficient jaw bone density to support dental implants. Finally, we will also need to look for signs of gum disease, as this can be another risk factor for implant failure.

How long do dental implants take?

The procedure takes place over multiple visits, and it could take 3-6 months to complete the treatment plan. How long your treatment takes will all depend on how long it takes for your jaw bone to fuse with the dental implant, which is a process known as osseointegration. We will discuss the treatment plan with you during your consultation.
